LED lighting saves money because it uses less power and lasts for many years.

A traditional incandescent bulb usually uses about 60 watts to create around 800 lumens of light. An LED bulb can produce the same brightness using around 8 to 10 watts.

LEDs also work differently because they are directional light sources. This means they send most of their light in one direction instead of wasting it in all directions like incandescent or halogen lights.

Why LEDs Use Less Electricity

LED lights rely on an electrical current passing through a semiconductor to produce light. They are far more efficient because they waste much less energy as heat.

Traditional incandescent bulbs waste around 90 to 95 per cent of their energy as heat. Only a small amount becomes actual light. LEDs waste far less energy in the form of heat, which is why they use so little electricity to create the same brightness.

Higher lumen output per watt

LEDs normally produce around 80 to 110 lumens per watt, which means they create much more light for the same amount of electricity. Incandescent bulbs only produce around 10 to 15 lumens per watt, which means LEDs are roughly six to eight times more efficient.

Reduced heat production

LEDs work at much lower temperatures because they waste far less energy as heat. This allows more of the electricity to become usable light and helps the bulb stay cooler.

• LED lights use about 75 per cent less electricity than incandescent lights.

• LEDs last up to ten to twenty five times longer than incandescent bulbs.
